1836 Hamilton's Benefit Ball Invitation, Hartford, CT


This invitation reads:

“Hamilton’s Benefit Ball.

The company of [handwritten - Mr. J.P. Jones & Lady] is respectfully submitted at the City Hall on Wednesday Evening, March 9th, 1836, at 6 o’clock P.M.

Tickets to be had at the door of the Hall. Price $1.50. Dancing to commence at 7 o’clock precisely.

Hartford, March 4th, 1836.”

The “managers” were:

Wm. Hayden, James T. Pratt, Wm. J. Denslow, Normand Lyman, David Clark, J.H. Ashmead, Charles W. Curtis, J.B. Shultas, Tudor Adams, S.G. Shaw, Charles C. Newton, A.M. Burnham, Asa S. Porter, Wm. H. Gilbert.

The back of the invitation has “Mr. John P. Jones, Present” handwritten on it.

(Don’t you love the idea of “precisely” as to the time of dancing commencing? And can you imagine anyone today sending out this invitation five days before the event? )

Condition: invitation was comprised of two leaves. The front has a clean tear that has been mended with an invisible archival tape. Interior pages are blank, as was usually the case at the time. There are two horizontal fold lines. Size 4.0 x 5.0 inches.
